"Entering this squat brick building in downtown Gilbert is stepping back in time. Service is cafeteria-style and friendly. People tuck into root beer floats and peach cobblers. The menu is deep, and many barbecue mainstays are well represented. Smokers use local Arizona pecan wood. Some ingredients are local, many even from nearby Agritopia, which is owned by Joe Johnston, same as Joe’s. Highlights? You’d do well to both embrace tradition and steer off the beaten path. Bone-in dark meat chicken off the smoker is a hit. So is the barbecue chicken salad with Fritos and sour cream." - Chris Malloy
