"In downtown Oceanside, I found High-Pie stepping into its next act as a retro pie shop and bakery housed in the restored Graves House. Decorated with vintage furnishings and historical images of the Oceanside area—plus set photos from Top Gun paying tribute to the building’s previous on-screen role—the shop showcases treats on a Willy Wonka–esque conveyor belt. The sweet, streamlined menu centers on classic fried hand pies in seasonal fruit flavors like apple and cherry, as well as mini pies à la mode filled with house-made mascarpone ice cream; the ice cream–filled pies are served on a stick for portability and come with dipping sauces such as chocolate, lemon curd, and sea salt caramel. Open daily, High-Pie also serves hot coffee and specialty drinks including apple kombucha, cherry cider, and New Orleans–style iced coffee sweetened with condensed milk. Operated by hospitality pro Tara Lazar, the shop plans to integrate pies into the Mission Pacific Hotel experience (warm pies as welcome gifts, a poolside pie cart) and will even use a vintage scooter for deliveries to adjacent hotels." - Candice Woo
