"Promising comfort food with a modern twist, Jacksonville, Florida-based Maple Street Biscuit Co. finally fulfills its long announced ambition of an expansion into Charleston. The flaky buttermilk biscuit specialists will take over corner space “U” at the James Island Center at 1739 Maybank Hwy., not far from the Harris Teeter supermarket. Formerly home to the shuttered James Island Cleaners, the site will be transformed into one of its almost two dozen “Community Stores,” highlighted by a compact menu served only at breakfast and lunch and never on Sundays. Expect the full line of biscuits, including a sticky maple, the Squawking Goat with fried chicken and goat cheese, plus biscuits and sausage gravy, and entrees such as a vanilla bean waffle with Asiago and pecanwood smoke bacon baked in.
