"Inside the Warwick Hotel at 1776 Grant Street, I visited a new cat-themed Italian restaurant called Gattara, a 5,632-square-foot space where Thomas Newsted (formerly executive chef at The Perfect Landing) and his team prepare classic Italian cuisine with a modern twist, focusing on Italian ingredients and seasonal produce. At the heart of the dining room is a copper-clad pizza oven that cooks Neapolitan-style pizzas at 700 degrees for 90 to 180 seconds; pizzas include the Funghi (sautéed mushrooms, white wine cream sauce, and garlic chili oil) and the Bianco Verde (romesco cauliflower, leeks, and radicchio topped with kale and agrumato), plus pies featuring Colorado meats such as house-made fennel salsiccia, pork cheeks, elk pepperoni, and a Colorado lamb chop, with dough that incorporates Denver Pale Ale from Great Divide Brewery. The lunch and dinner menus also offer appetizers like Yukon Gold gnocchi with smoked pork cheeks, mache, and giardiniera and yellowtail crudo with limoncello vinaigrette, along with pastas, desserts, and other entrees. The cocktail list mixes classics and specialty drinks featuring local spirits from Leopold Bros. and Stranahan’s Whiskey. Gattara serves breakfast daily and weekend brunch (including a vanilla French toast drizzled with butterscotch anglaise and bottomless mimosas) and is open daily from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. The cat theme (the name references an Italian word similar to “cat lady”) is carried through the decor with hidden felines in the wallpaper, a large mural of a curious-looking cat behind the 47-seat bar, cat-themed cocktail names, and copper accents; the main dining room’s sliding doors open to a newly renovated patio dotted with couches that seats more than 100 people, features a fireplace, and is outfitted for year-round use." - Paul Albani-Burgio
