"Bringing a drive-through for succulent grilled meat, chicken katsu, and kalbi short ribs to DFW, Shaka Hawaiian BBQ will debut at 5733 TX-121 in The Colony across from the enormous Grandscape development. Owner Welby Tsang—who says there aren’t many choices for Hawaiian barbecue in Dallas and was inspired by trips to Hawaii—aims to introduce local diners to this style of barbecue; the 30-year-old restaurateur previously took over two of his parents’ Chinese restaurants in Phoenix. The counter-service spot seats 48 between high-top and low-top tables and is decorated with a Hawaiian surfboard, driftwood accents, and ocean-blue walls, with four TVs and a very lengthy menu of combo plates: sweet-glazed chicken or beef barbecue, Korean-style kalbi short ribs, Japanese fried chicken katsu, slow-roasted kalua pork, fried white fish, and crispy shrimp—each plate served with rice, pasta salad, and steamed veggies. For die-hard fans there’s also the iconic spam and eggs and musubis, and drinks include fresh young coconut, sodas, and Hawaiian Sun juices and teas. Shaka Hawaiian BBQ officially opens February 14 and will operate daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., with the drive-thru open until 10." - Alaena Hostetter
