"In Oak Lawn I visited Alexandre’s, a cozy gay bar on the Cedar Springs strip that debuted a tongue-in-cheek “Chick-full-gay” fried chicken sandwich just in time for Pride in Dallas on September 18. Chef Sharina Hassell created the sandwich—a pickled-brined chicken breast breaded with a secret, pepper-forward recipe that yields a panko-like texture and a lightly sweet finish—topped with two crinkle-cut pickles and a smear of mayo on both buns (cheekily captioned on Instagram as “our pickles touch”). Packaged in a bag with a rainbow sticker, the sandwiches were sold to parade marchers as part of Hassell’s effort “to reclaim something for our community,” and they’re now set to become a regular special available only on Sundays (the day “the Lord and Chik-fil-A rest”). Hassell, who has boycotted the chain she was referencing for years, says the sandwich was made so people can get their chicken fix and feel good about it, and she’s considering pairing it with wrinkle or waffle fries or adding a secret sauce in the future." - Courtney E.
