"Having started inside Pedaler’s Fork in 2011, founders Gideon Kleinman and Robbie Schaeffer wanted a cafe next to their favorite mountain biking trails and have applied that same recipe to a Santa Monica location opening mid-July at the corner of 20th and Santa Monica Boulevard. The Santa Monica outpost offers about 1,000 square feet for cyclists, laptop warriors, and hospital workers, plus a 600-square-foot patio, and will serve pre-packaged salads and sandwiches from Pedaler’s, fresh juice from Juice Budz, and pastry from Bakers Kneaded. While there’s a heavy emphasis on cycling culture, repairs, and activities—with secure bike racks and an underground parking lot—Kleinman stresses the space is welcoming to all, especially nearby health care professionals: “We wanted to be next to a hospital for health care professionals that need it. Coffee is a serious commodity when working at or visiting a hospital. We have a chance to give a good product to those that are overworked and underappreciated.” The opening is the neighborhood’s first food arrival amid other incoming spots, and despite some setbacks in the coffee-bicycle combination (for example, The Wheelhouse closed), 10 Speed is joining a continuing local trend of cycling-centric cafes; hours will be 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily." - Mona Holmes
