"The nalli nihari — a dish Muslims traditionally enjoy after the first namaz (prayer) — at Noor Mohammadi is a rich, gelatinous, slow-cooked stew of buff (water buffalo) complete with chunks of bone marrow floating in the gravy; order a bowl with thick, buttery tandoori rotis and you’re set for dinner. The restaurant, currently owned by Raashid Abdul Hakim, is etched in pop culture in Mumbai. There’s a sketch by the legendary M.F. Hussain at the entrance, made specially in honor of his meals at the restaurant. There’s also a dish on the menu contributed by the Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt (the Chicken Sanju Baba). At one point, migrants without a fixed home would give the restaurant as their address for letters. After turning 100 years old in 2023, Noor Mohammadi solidified itself as a living part of the fabric of Mumbai’s history." - Sumedh Natu
