"A menu with “monkey gland sauce” and “bunny chow” might raise a few eyebrows in the United States, but not in South Africa. For those who’ve tried neither, one is a tangy barbecue sauce unrelated to monkeys, the other is an unsliced bread loaf filled with curry. You can find both at Dutchy’s, a half market and half restaurant in Plantation that’s popular with homesick yachties passing through Ft. Lauderdale’s marinas looking to stock up on frozen boerewors and droëwors. The food here is as fun as it sounds, starting with an entire platter of biltong that will make it hard to go back to regular old jerky. But our favorite is that bunny chow, a comforting bread bowl filled with spicy lamb curry, potatoes, and sambal. There’s usually a rugby game playing on the big screen, and you can shop for South African sweets, like Tumbles and Noshes while you digest lunch." - Virginia Otazo
