"Women-led and rooted in environmental purpose, this oyster company is run by Elizabeth Peeples and Stefanie Bassett, who left New York City to take over a hobby farm in 2018 and now cultivate bivalves on the east side of Shelter Island in Gardiners Bay. Direct access to the Atlantic—“that’s the crisp taste you might’ve noticed with our oyster,” Peeples explains—sets it apart from other local farms, most of which are located in the Peconic Bay. Their origin story traces back to a boozy shucking class that sparked an obsession with oysters’ role as filter feeders improving water quality, and today they employ three other women and, as Bassett puts it, “love getting more women on the water.”" - Ella Riley-Adams
