"The market town of Charlbury is close enough to London to make this first-rate pub with rooms unusually reachable as a weekend escape: it’s a single train from Paddington and a 10-minute walk from the station. Inside, a pared-back restaurant with exposed beams, open fires, and plaster walls gives way to ten bracingly simple bedrooms with little artificial light and a neutral palette, yet plenty of creature comforts—standalone baths, radios, woolen blankets, and rainfall showers; families can also take over the two-bedroom Loaf Cottage down the road (children aren’t allowed in the other rooms). Founded by Phil Winser and James Gummer of The Pelican and The Hero fame, it draws people in for traditional British food, much of it grown on a nearby farm in Chipping Norton, so do book dinner at least once. The mood is lively on weekends, amenities are kept to the essentials (restaurant, bar), and the house pies are the thing to order—best with a heaped bowl of roasted potatoes and a green salad." - Jo Rodgers
