"How did it strike you on arrival?Meliá is the first five-star Spanish hotel in the Middle East. Guests are immediately greeted by a dramatic, futuristic lobby decorated with sleek Italian furniture and black marble. You'll have to enter through an underground parking garage, though, which kills some of the romance. Nice. What’s the crowd like? Not surprisingly, many Spanish travelers. The good stuff: Tell us about your room. The classic Meliá Guestroom is awash in shades of taupe and brown with mauve accents that complement the dark wood floors and fluffy throw rugs. There’s not much by way of art, but TVs are hidden behind a sleek mirrored panel. Depending on the room, you might hear music from the downstairs nightclub. South-facing rooms have skyline views. We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us?Large beds are soft and comfortable. Different pillows are available upon request. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down. The bathroom is separated from the room by a glass wall (and a curtain). Some rooms have bathtubs but no showers, though most include a separate toilet, shower, and bath. Toiletries are neatly packaged and abundant but aren’t name-brand. Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word?Wifi is free with improved quality and speed. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you. Some rooms are loud, so avoid lower floors if you’re hoping for quiet tranquility. If you're in Dubai for the nightlife, the lobby bar is good for a rousing night out. Chef Sanjeev Kapoor’s Indian restaurant is rightfully popular with guests and locals alike. What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay?Estrellas, the rooftop pool bar and lounge, is a nice surprise. Bottom line: worth it, and why?Rooms are sleek, clean, and modern, and the location is convenient to both the airport and a few other attractions, including Dubai Creek and the old souks. A good value option if you’re not yet ready to splash out." - Laura Ratliff
