"Opened in Carlsbad Village just before yesterday’s reopening rollback, Pure Project’s first North County outpost launched with to‑go sales of growlers, crowlers, and packaged beer in cans and bottles. Designed by local firm Tec/scape, I found the 1,200‑square‑foot tasting room includes a 300‑square‑foot outdoor lounge and a 20‑tap bar that will offer a rotating list of beers and, occasionally, beer slushies. Barrels by the Sea, brewed specifically for the Carlsbad opening, is a Barrel Aged Imperial Stout with pecan, caramel, cinnamon, and graham cracker. I noted that although the building is licensed for production there won’t be brewing on site; the space will instead house barrels and casks for fermentation. Co‑founder Mat Robar says the brewery is working on a plan to expand the outdoor footprint at the new State Street space, as well as at its locations in Bankers Hill and Miramar, to offer patio seating and food service. During the first shutdown Pure Project’s production remained at full capacity as the team explored new distribution, including direct delivery and an ongoing weekly Saturday shipping sale to customers in California and Nevada, and Robar says the team is feeling hopefully optimistic and still plans to expand." - Candice Woo
