"At the chain’s headquarters test store in Irving, a new pumpkin spice Slurpee blends pure pumpkin-spice syrup with Slurpee ice rather than any coffee or dairy notes. The initial sip has the familiar Slurpee mouthfeel with pronounced top notes of cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger, a sensation that feels oddly dissonant in a frozen format. The aftertaste is strong—likely from multiple syrups—and cinnamon lingering on a cold tongue can be off-putting. As the drink melts, a cloying vanilla syrup element grows more dominant and the cup needs shaking to stay palatable; it tastes best straight from the machine and becomes increasingly unpleasant as it dilutes. Conceptually this fits long, hot summers, but in practice the mash-up of pumpkin spice and Slurpee doesn’t sit well together." - Courtney E. Smith
