Zavala’s is located at the corner of Brisket and Main (yes, really) in a low-slung building that served as a root beer stand in the 1940s. Grand Prairie renamed the street in 2020 to recognize Zavala's, and navigating bureaucracy in the name of barbecue is the highest possible honor. Order meats by the pound, or try specialties like the aptly named Sloppy Juan taco—chopped brisket, pulled pork, and barbecue sauce on a warm tortilla—and the spicy pizza pepper sausage checkered with red pepper flakes. Throw in the cheesy jalapeño hominy (it’s like a toothier take on mac and cheese), and take a 12-pack of fresh tortillas with you on the way out to save a little time on your next grocery run. - Kevin Gray
