"Opened on June 22 in Beerwah, Queensland — about 60 miles north of Brisbane — this new lodge was created so guests can stay overnight and appreciate local wildlife. Located just south of the Irwin family's Australia Zoo near the Glass House Mountains, the property offers eight family-friendly cabins plus a two-room accessible cabin set in habitat where I can spot koalas, red kangaroos, and emus; there is also a new home for the zoo's southern koalas (victims of the 2020 bushfires) living alongside echidnas. The build is full of Irwin family touches and sentimental details: the front doors and check-in desk are recycled timber from Steve's original Crocodile Environmental Park (the place where Steve and Terri first met in 1991), Bindi and Robert contributed theming (Bindi named the restaurant Warrior and Robert's photos of Australia Zoo crocodiles were printed onto the pool tiles), and First Nation artwork features throughout. Guests receive a welcome gift and free breakfast, unlimited entry to Australia Zoo plus shuttle service and access to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, exclusive use of an 82-foot infinity pool called The Billabong, and on-site amenities including a gift shop, laundry, and 24-hour concierge, all designed to celebrate Steve Irwin's love of wildlife, fun and family." - Rachel Chang Rachel Chang Rachel Chang is a travel and pop culture journalist who contributes to Travel + Leisure, Condé Nast Traveler, Lonely Planet, and more.
